The main challenge of the Inside Outside garden was to create a garden that would not only enhance the interior living space but also provide privacy and protection from the elements. The large glass facade of the private residence meant that curtains were not desired, so the garden had to serve as a natural barrier between the outside world and the interior.
To achieve this, the external facade and inner walls around the window were covered with natural stone, blurring the boundary between the inside and outside. A small terrace was built, extending the living room visually towards the garden. Near the window, a group of miniature birch trees and a collection of plants were carefully selected to provide an ever-changing view throughout the year.
One of the unique features of the Inside Outside garden is its ability to adapt to the changing seasons. The central location of the window meant that the garden had to be interesting and visually appealing year-round. From vibrant blooms in the spring to lush greenery in the summer, and from colorful foliage in the fall to the stark beauty of bare branches in the winter, the garden offers a captivating view in every season.
Despite the challenging climate and poor soil in the area, the Inside Outside garden was designed to seamlessly blend into its natural surroundings. The careful analysis of soil conditions, wind patterns, and sun exposure allowed for the selection of plant species that could thrive in this specific environment.
The Inside Outside garden has received recognition for its innovative design. In 2019, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in Landscape Planning and Garden Design. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate excellence in both aesthetics and functionality, meeting the highest professional and industrial standards.
The Inside Outside garden is a testament to the harmonious integration of nature and design. It serves as a reminder that even in the most urban environments, it is possible to create a space that allows residents to connect with nature and find solace in its beauty.
